Test Shot 1

Here is a video explaining our first practice shot. We wanted to practice this shot in order to execute it perfectly when we need too, as it will be the most significant shot in our entire music video. The shot will feature in a scene between our two characters.  The shot will show Louise sitting in her bedroom with her back to the door and Joe is sitting in the hallway with his back to the same door.

We used a test subject to practice the shot and the editing required through using Imovie.

Story Board

These images above are parts of our storyboard, however they are not definite as we may want to make throughout the filming process.

I See New

Filming at Youth Group + Lyric Change

The original song ' I See' was written by Joe himself, it originally only featured his vocals. Once we had both listened to the track we loved it however it did feel like it lacked another level of vocal. After a lot of discussion we decided to incorporate female vocals onto the track, this is where our friend Louise comes in. We realized that adding a female vocal allows us to create a more fitting story line to the track.

When Louise was first added to the song the lyrics were the same, but after reviewing the track we discovered that the parts that Louise was singing didn't quite fit.  Joe decided it would work best if he made some subtle changes to the song. He changes some of the lyrics around so that they all fitted within the chords of the song. Me and my partner Georgina decided to re -film a more up-to-date version of the song.  So I met Joe and Louise at their youth group  in order to record the new song.

Copyright Permission

If we were to create a music video using a copyrighted song, we would have had to secure permission from the artist to allow us to use their track. However we are going to use a song that our friends have wrote so we thought that it would be a good idea to obtain their permission to make it more official and professional.

Below is the contract that we created in order to gain Joe and Louise's permission to use their song. We will ask them both to sign the contract and upload a more recent version when they have.

Target Audience Via Social Networking

Social Networking in this era has become a great way for people to communicate. It is a great way of promoting Web 2.0 as it allows you to upload images and videos. We therefore took advantage of this social networking site and uploaded a video of Joe and Louise singing the song that we are going to use for our music video.

Once we have uploaded it to Facebook we will write a comment asking people to view it and therefore leave comments, which will enable us to gain some audience feedback and also narrow down our potential target audience.

From this audience feedback we have realised that our target audience seems to be teenage girls between the ages of 15-20. When we create our music video we shall consider the target audience and see if features we may include in our music video are appropriate for our target audience.

Target Audience Questionnaire and Results

I have conducted some Target Audience Research through the use of a questionnaire. I was concerned with attempting to find out the audiences favourite genre and also the most popular age group that listens to this genre. I gave my questionnaire to 10 males and 10 females and asked them to complete it. The presentation shows a couple of graphs of my results.

Original Song - I See

The video above is the original song that me and Gina are going to use for our music video. The song is called 'I See'.

Can you hear my voice? Out here in the cold I gave you all I had to give Now all I have is what you did not take I kept my head so as not to fall again But I failed at least now Your lips they lie but your eyes told the truth Now why can’t I walk away? Now I wish that you could see me I just want you back The simple truth which I long to say Is that I, miss you And though she did not love you At least not the way she was supposed to But now you’re searching for it But you did not find it in me Now I wish that you could see me now And I just want you back The simple truth that I long to say Is that I miss you And these tears, falling from my eyes Won’t keep you from walking But please, think about what you said Now I see you don’t care You don’t care No, you don’t Now I wish that you could see me now I just want you back The simple truth that I longed to say Is that I miss you (x2) Is that I love you Is that I love you

Characters

Louise
Joe
When considering characters to act in our music video, I felt that me and partner already knew that Joe and Louise would be the main characters. This is because they wrote the song and should therefore play a major part in constructing the music video for it. They are both also the correct age for our target audience, therefore they will be more relatable for our target audience.

In order for our music video to appear realistic and professional  we had to consider the style of dress for both our characters. We briefly looked at mise en scene ( clothing) within our mood board and came to a decision that we ere going to dress our characters formally. As you can see from the images to the left, both our characters are wearing black and white only, this is because of our decision to film in black and white. We feel that black and white mise en will benefit the music video quality. The formal dress style also helps the audience identify the narrative, as their dress style appears as if they are heading out for a meal or even a date.

Mood Board

Above is a video of me and my partner Georgina Jefimik discussing our Mood Board idea. We created a Mood Board so that all of our ideas were in one place and that we could refer back to it when we come to create our music video. This Mood Board allows us to change our idea if we need too, even though our idea is quite definitive. Below are a few images of each selection of our Mood Board:

Evaluating Screenshots

I have evaluated a few screen shots from the videos that have inspired us in order to pin point the exact features we like from each video. By using screenshots it has enabled me to view the features and consider ways to utilise them.

Theorist 3 - Steve Archer

Steve Archer is another theorist that I have researched, his theory argues that there needs to be a strong and coherent relationship between the narrative and performance in music videos. This however is a strong contrast to Goodwin's theory as he believes there doesn't have to be a coherent relationship but instead says that what is happening on screen doesn't necessarily have to match the lyrics. He says that the music video will reflect the genre of music. Steve Archer also goes on to say that a music video will cut between a narrative and performance from the artist/band. Finally he states that a choreographed dance might be part of the performance or something added to the video that will aid visualisation.

Carol Vernallis - Music Video Theory

I have created a Powerpoint then converted it to a 'slideshare' format in order to be able to upload it to my blog. Carol Vernallis is the first theorists that I have looked at, however I will also research other theorists that look at music video theory.

Music Video History Timeline

Above I have created a timeline using an online program called 'TimeToast', I wanted to show how music videos and the industry have evolved from the 1900's.

I also think that in order to create a music video, I need to fully understand the history of music videos so I will be able to create a professional looking music video of my own.

Music Videos today are created in order to be used as a marketing device to promote the artist or the band and to help with the record sales. Modern music videos are aired and released at specific times as the timing of the release can affect the sales of the music video and other merchandise such as concert tickets, album releases etc.

Starting Research and Planning

I have reviewed the A2 media brief, for this year the brief is to create a music video as well as a promotion package for the release of an album. Which should also include a cover for its release as part of a digipak and a magazine advertisement for the digipak.

For A2 media I have decided to work work with Georgina Jefimik as I believe we will work well together and allocate tasks to each other fairly and productively as we both posses different qualities that will benefit our overall outcome.

We will now begin our relevant research and planning for our own music video idea.

Video Task - 'Black Hole Sun'

Song Title - BLACK HOLE SUN
Our Interpretation after only hearing the track

The task was to create a music video to an existing music track. We listened to the song and did not view the video itself, as we wanted to have our own individual impressions of the track 'Black Hole Sun'.  I worked with Georgina and together we came up with an idea for a music video. We decided that the music itself sounded and suited a country and western theme. We wanted our video to be simple and not to complicated. We also said that we wanted a country feel to it along with a modern western twist. Also we believed that a lot of music videos focus more on the artist than the music itself. We wanted to subvert this and make our video more about the music rather than promoting the artist.

Our music video for the song 'Black Hole Sun' would begin with a young man dressed as a cowboy, he would be the distance and barely visible. He will he then begin to walk towards the camera. The video will be set in the desert, and there will be several scenes on a deserted highway. As we want our video to depict loneliness and self loathing. Because there will be a scene at the end where our cowboy will find 'himself' and his band.  The camera will switch from clips of the man alone to clips of him and his band actually playing the music in the desert. The ending shot will depict the cowboy jumping into the back of a pickup truck, which will then drive off into the distance. The whole video will have an american vibe to it.

Me and Georgina also considered the 'Mise En Scene' of our video. We mainly considered the outfit that our main character, the cowboy would be wearing.  We decided that the man should appear simply dressed, in pale blue ripped jeans, a checked shirt and a white T - Shirt beneath. We also said that he should carry his guitar in a case on his back, to emit a rocker cowboy persona. We also suggested that the band would wear dark clothing, so that the cowboy appears different and unique.

Also regarding the sound we wanted the track to be played whilst the artist is singing synchronized to the music.
Actual Music Video
The video above is the actual music video for the song "Black Hole Sun'. The video is surreal and apocalyptic as it centres around a surburban neighbourhood in which all of the residents get sucked into a black hole. The people in the video are false and they seem oblivious to the real world, this is why they get sucked into the black hole. The music video itself was released in 1994, and it won an award for the best metal/ hard rock video at the MTV Awards.

Music Video Research

A2 Media Brief

For A2 Media this year the task is to create our very own music video. The brief for A2 Media this year is as follows:
A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
  •  A website homepage for the band
  • A digipak for the album's release
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipak
The skills and techniques from As media last year have developed in such a way that they will benefit me throughout this year at A2 media.I have learnt about new technologies and how to utilise them to my advantage. I will be working within a small group to create the music for the promo video, so that I don't have to worry about copyright infringement.
